CHESTER ZOO
Chester Zoo is a painting series that was inspired by a meaningful interaction between the artist and his young son during a break from setting up a new studio.
Although seemingly abstract at first glance, they are in fact based on the artist’s early use of a Polaroid camera during his childhood visits to Chester Zoo but impatience often resulted in the photographic paper being exposed too soon—yielding bright orange lines, inky blacks, and glossy whites instead of the intended image of say a hippo these early attempts at photography although technically imperfect still made a lasting visual imprint on the artist.
These early childhood impressions invites viewers to reflect on the impermanence of life and the significant moments we strive to preserve as they shift from certainty to imagined as time passes and our memory fades.
